1a) I think they are talking about this issue so everyone can really see and feel what is really going on in Haiti.

Regina, you made me giggle when you said that American Samoa is your new favorite country! I love what I saw of it as well, but it's actually a territory of the United States, not a separate country. Although, as Randy said, they don't have all of the rights of Americans. Katherine, I like two things that you said. First, that compared to how these Samoan kids have it, our school seems like a palace. It just shows you that while many have it better, there are always going to be those who have it a lot worse, in any situation. Second, the problem in Haiti with getting supplies to the people who need it, is similar to the problem with getting food and water to those who need it. First, their airport is small and has only one runway, so it's hard to get planes to land and have supplies landed and unloaded (some are using the runways in DR and driving it over). The larger problem is getting through the streets of Port Au Prince itself. The problems with that are multifold: (1) The streets are clogged with rubble (and bodies), therefore making it harder for trucks/cars through, (2) There is little communication (phone lines are down) so it's hard to know where the supplies need to go (the main hospital collapsed), and (3) You can't just show up and give out supplies - you have to make sure that those going out to distribute the food/water are going to be safe. Although it's mostly calm at the moment, after not having food and water for a few days, people are desperate. Desperation can cause people to riot or rush the truck, resulting in injuries (or death) for those giving out the food/medical supplies. Unfortunately, it takes time to figure all of these logistics out, and while they're doing the figuring, people are dying.

I can appreciate your sympathy for Penelope Cruz working hard and the fact that she might need a much-deserved rest. I happen to actually like Penelope Cruz, because she takes different kinds of movie roles and does a good job with them, but keep in mind that she makes millions of dollars for each movie. I know I don't have to tell you this, but there are millions of people who work 16-18 hours per day in non-glamorous jobs, living paycheck to paycheck, raising families, who don't have the luxury of taking time off and living off of their millions. I can appreciate her work, but I don't know that I have a lot of sympathy for her situation (nor that of any other actors who think their jobs are SO hard). I'm sorry if that sounds a bit harsh... :)

1a. I think they are talking about this issue because people other than Haitians should know what is going on around the world. They wants us to see the reality behind everything, and not be blind or ignorant about what is going on. They want and need people to help that poor country and the people in it survive.
