What I found disturbing was the happy birthday song the soldiers song to the eighteen year old kid. The song seemed to be nice at first but the ending was pretty much saying since its your birthday you are screwed because you have been put in the military. I felt mixed emotions when I saw the Japanese solider who was crying but stood his ground while he was getting shot at. I guess he loved his country and was either sad to go or didn’t want to die but didn’t want to seem like a coward by leaving his fellow soilders.

Randy, they have re-enactments everywhere. There are re-enactments of Gettysburgh, Revolutionary War battles, and any other battles you can think of. They dress realistic to the period. I once saw a group re-enacting a battle during the summer and were wearing heavy cotton uniforms. At one point, a guy just passed out from the heat. I remember a guy yelling, "We need a doctor!" and then to distinguish it from someone acting (because it was a battle), they yelled, "We need a REAL doctor!" It was interesting.

I wasn't expecting the pacific the way I watched it. I was expecting a sad plot about war and leaving your family etc. It's so weird how the man told his neighbor that he joined the marines and she just told him to take care of himself. I mean doesn't she have anything else to say? the guy is going to war..he is sacrificing his life for you(and his country). Another thing I found interesting is when they shot that Japanese guy and kept shooting him until that soldier shot him in the chest.

A couple of things about the blind pianist (a "pianist" is what you call one who plays the piano)... They have been reporting on this man for YEARS -- I loved seeing him again! This man is what is called a "savant," which means that although he has a developmental disorder (doesn't know right from left, can't tie his shoes), he has one area of expertise or brilliance that are in contrast to his overall limitations. For example, a savant might not be able to communicate but might be spectacular chess player, or might be able to recall the dates of anything in history. Savants have the most interesting abilities sometimes, which are in such stark contrast to their general limitations. No one can explain how these things happen to savants either.

Wall Street is an actual street in downtown Manhattan. The American Stock Exchange (where they trade stocks) is on Wall Street. At one point, all of the major banks were located on or near Wall Street. It is so important because the economy of the United States affects the rest of the world. It's a long topic to cover -- too long to cover in a blog posting -- so if you'd like to learn about it, we could do that in class as well...
