As we discussed today, you all need to correct the grammar & spelling mistakes of your "60 Minutes" postings by Thursday night (so that I have them by Friday). Please post your corrected text here and hand me your original postings so that I can compare them. (In addition, there is going to be a section of the Entenmann's homework holder in the back of my room for our work -- not that you all don't see me all the time, but just in case I'm not around and you want to leave it there...)
Here are tonights topics: 1. "Watching the Border" 2. "Relevations From The Campaign" 3. "Resurrecting the Extinct" To repeat, the 3 questions you should be answering for each segment are: a. Why do you think they're talking about this person/issue? b. Describe, in detail, what you learned about the topic/issue. c. What is your opinion of this topic/issue? Again, this is due by Monday night and can be seen on http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/60minutes/main3415.shtml if you're not home to DVR/tape it.. Hey folks, I wanted to share a website with you that might help as you read your way through "1984." As I might have mentioned, there is a website that basically acts as a dictionary for "newspeak," the language they use in "1984." http://www.newspeakdictionary.com/ To get to the actual dictionary, you have to click on the left hand side where it says, "1984-Newspeak," but I encourage you to look around the entire website. The entire site is interesting (in a slightly disturbing way), so you might want to have a look around. Also, this weekend, just for fun, try to think about/keep track of how many times you encounter something from the world described in "1984" - something where "Big Brother" might be watching you or "Newspeak" (shortening the language) might be present. Just think about it... And what the heck -- throw your ideas/c on the blog... :) Here are tonights topics: 1. "Offshore Banking" ("offshore" meaning "not in this country"... Really rich people put their money in banks in the country of Switzerland to avoid taxes here.) The Swiss ("Swiss" is what you call people from "Switzerland," like 'swiss cheese'), in addition to being the only country that stays neutral in all wars, also keeps complete secrecy when it comes to banking -- which is why the rich bank there. 2. "VA Benefits" ("VA" stands for "Veteran's Administration" -- this is the government department that takes care of benefits that men/women of the armed forces get when they are finished with their service to our country.) 3. "Elephant Language" (if you like elephants, you'll love this. If you don't like elephants, you'll still love this.) To repeat, the 3 questions you should be answering for each segment are: a. Why do you think they're talking about this person/issue? b. Describe, in detail, what you learned about the topic/issue. c. What is your opinion of this topic/issue? Again, this is due by Monday night and can be seen on http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/60minutes/main3415.shtml if you're not home to DVR/tape it.You guys did a great job with this last week -- if confused about what it should look like, you can look at the last "60 Minutes" blog below... A "whodunnit" is a word for a detective story in which the reader (or viewer) is given clues and must figure out "who done it" a.k.a. the solution to the puzzle. Don't you sometimes find it amazing when you think you're noticing everything that's going on in a situation, but when you look back (or see the actual video of what happened), you realize that you've actually noticed very little? Please watch this video until the end and share with the group how observant you really were. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubNF9QNEQLA |
